Maneuvering through the various flush wood door construction standards and realizing how each standard impacts the material used to
fabricate wood doors is an important factor in identify the type of door that is best suited based on project requirements. The two primary industry construction standards are WDMA (Window & Door Manufacturer’s Association and AWS (Architectural Woodwork Standards).

WDMA: Window & Door Manufacturer’s Association www.wdma.com
•Performance based standard for the construction of architectural wood doors
•Developed by door manufacturers
•Three Performance Duty Levels; Standard Duty, Heavy Duty, Extra Heavy Duty
•Addresses aesthetics and performance attributes of a door
•Products tested against 8 performance attributes:
-Adhesive Bond – WDMA TM-6 -Screw Holding – WDMS TM-10
-Cycle Slam – WDMA TM-7 -Telegraph – WDMA TM-1
-Hinge-Loading – WDMA TM-8 -Warp Tolerance – WDMA TM-2
-Door Finishes- Per ASTM -Squareness- WDMA TM-3
•Premium Grade requires A Grade veneer (AA available on request)
•Veneer per the Hardwood Plywood Veneer Association (HPVA)
•Veneer leaf width same as AWS -
-3” min for Qtr Sliced-A and AA Grade
-4” minimum for Plain Sliced and Rotary-A Grade
-5” minimum for Plain Sliced and Rotary-AA Grade
•Sealing of rails is not required per the standard-specific to manufacturers warranty
•Lowest cost construction of all door standards
•Utilizes best practices in door construction based on resource conservation
•Standard followed by most door manufacturers

•Prescriptive construction accepting WDMA Performance Duty Levels
•Premium Grade requires AA Grade veneer (most expensive option)
•Custom Grade requires A Grade veneer
•Veneer leaf width same as WDMA per the Hardwood Plywood Veneer Association
•Sealing of rails required if testing data is not available
